The Gray Family Foundation and Pisces Foundation jointly funded this framework, designed by a team of Oregon educators to: define what environmental literacy looks like at each grade level; integrate the OELP with Next Generation Science Standards and Oregon Social Sciences Standards; and suggest classroom activities for K-12 educators to promote environmental literacy.

The Foundation analyzed the project economic impact of scaling Outdoor School to be offered statewide for every Oregon fifth or sixth grader. The results include an estimated 600 FTE jobs created and $27 million generated for the state.

The Foundation funded this Portland State University study based on data from the Multnomah Education Service District (MESD) Outdoor School Program. The study correlates Outdoor School participation with student success indicators such as school attendance and classroom engagement.
